Como faz todos os anos, a APLB-Sindicato se integra à programação do Outubro Rosa, campanha de conscientização dirigida à sociedade e às mulheres sobre a importância da prevenção e do diagnóstico precoce do câncer de mama.
O câncer de mama é o mais comum entre as mulheres no mundo e no Brasil. Depois do câncer de pele não melanoma, responde por cerca de 25% dos casos novos a cada ano. De acordo com o INCA, Cerca de 960 mil novos casos de câncer serão diagnosticados no Brasil em 2017. Destes, aproximadamente 60 mil novos casos são de câncer de mama. Hoje milhares de pacientes e suas famílias, amigos, colegas convivem com a doença. A detecção precoce ajuda a reduzir a mortalidade e traz melhores resultados no tratamento.
O movimento surgiu em 1990, quando foi realizada a primeira Corrida pela Cura, em Nova York, e desde então, vem sendo promovida anualmente, sempre no mês de outubro, realizando ações de mobilização para o diagnóstico precoce da doença. O nome remete à cor do laço rosa que simboliza, mundialmente, a luta contra o câncer de mama e estimula a participação da população, empresas e entidades.
Desde 2010 o governo brasileiro, por meio do Ministério da Saúde e do Instituto Nacional de Câncer José Alencar Gomes da Silva (INCA), passou a integrar essa mobilização.
