O trabalho infantil é um dos mais graves problemas do país. Mais de 2,6 milhões de crianças e adolescentes, de cinco a 17 anos, estão em situação de trabalho no Brasil – no mundo, são mais de 160 milhões. Essa prática prejudica a aprendizagem, quando não tira o jovem da escola, e o torna vulnerável a acidentes, exposição à violência, entre outros problemas.
No Brasil, o 12 de junho foi instituído como Dia Nacional de Combate ao Trabalho Infantil pela Lei no 11.542/2007, data em que a CNTE e diversas entidades promovem campanhas para prevenir e erradicar o trabalho infantil.
